Parking with a blue badge

It is your responsibility to keep your blue badge safe.

You should not leave your badge in your vehicle when you are not displaying it, even if you use the vehicle often.

You can only use a blue badge if you are the registered holder, or if the registered holder is travelling with you in the car.

How to display your badge

You must display your badge on the dashboard of your car. The details must be visible through the windscreen.

If you park somewhere with a parking time limit, you must display the parking clock with the badge to show what time you arrived.

You could receive a parking ticket if you display these incorrectly.

Where you can park

You can use your blue badge to park in:

  • on-street pay and display spaces,
  • council car parks, and
  • blue badge holder-only bays.

You can park for up to 3 hours using your parking clock:
  • in resident bays,
  • on double yellow lines, and
  • on single yellow lines.

If you park in these places outside of controlled hours, it is free.

You must check car park signs for charges, time limits, and special rules for blue badge holders, or loading bans.

Event parking

During events in the city centre, you can use the on-street parking available. Charges apply when parking in Sophia Gardens or the Civic Centre.

Using your blue badge abroad

Rules for using your badge are different abroad. Check the rules in other countries.

Misuse of a blue badge

If you are misusing your badge or using a badge that does not belong to you, you could be fined up to £1,000. You could also be prosecuted.

You can tell us confidentially if someone is parking illegally in a blue badge space, or misusing a blue badge, by calling 029 2087 2087.

You can also tell us about other parking problems.
