Secondary School places for September 2018

You will be able to apply online for a secondary school place from Monday 2 October 2017.

Children start secondary school in the September after their eleventh birthday.

How to apply for a Secondary school place

Parents of pupils in year 6 at Cardiff Primary School will receive details of the application process.

The application system will allow you to apply for a place at up to 5 schools.

You are strongly advised to apply for 5 different schools. Listing the same school multiple times or applying for just one Community School does not give you a better chance of being offered a place at that school.

Before completing the application please read:

Pilot scheme for coordinated admission arrangements

Following a consultation to introduce a pilot scheme for coordinated admission arrangements for the year 7 age group for the 2018-2020 school years, the Governing Bodies of Whitchurch High (Foundation) School, Corpus Christi RC High School and St Teilo’s CW High School agreed to participate in the scheme. In addition to Cardiff Community Schools you can now also apply for places in these schools by using the on line application service.

If you submit a preference for Corpus Christi RC High School you must also complete a supplementary form which will be available from the school from 4 October 2017 in order for your application to be considered by the Governing Body.

If you submit a preference for St Teilo's CW High School you must also complete a supplementary form which will be available from the school from 20 October 2017 in order for your application to be considered by the Governing Body.

Applications for places at Whitchurch High (Foundation School) will be considered by the Governing Body of the School but you are not required to complete a supplementary form.

Applications for places at Community schools will be considered by the Council.

Please ensure that you understand the admission criteria for each school you are applying for.

If you have missed the deadline for applying for a secondary school place you will need to complete a late application form (105kb PDF)Link opens in a new window

We will consider late applications after all on-time applications have been processed. Details of our admissions criteria are available in our Schools Admissions Booklet (3mb PDF)Link opens in a new window

Late applications to Faith School and Whitchurch High  (Foundation) School must be made directly to the school.

If you need a place at a Cardiff school during the academic year, you must complete an in-year School Transfer Application

You can apply for a school place at any time of year but we do not usually consider requests more than one term in advance

In Year transfers are available for Years 1-6 (Primary) and Years 8-11 (Secondary).

If you are not moving house or your child is in Year 10 or 11 in Secondary School serious consideration should be given to changing school and should be discussed with your child’s present Head teacher before submitting application.
