Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)

This update, issued on 12 September 2023, covers the ongoing work of the Council with our schools, St David’s Hall and the latest on council housing and the wider estate.

Read about St David's Hall temporary closure.

We have completed a detailed review, including inspections at 115 schools across the city, and are happy that none of the schools contain Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).

We are not aware of the use of RAAC in any of our homes.

We regularly carry out refurbishment projects on our properties, including detailed surveys where appropriate, and use of the material has not been identified.

We are reviewing our records and deciding next steps. Where we consider further checks are needed to provide assurance, these will be carried out as soon as possible.
The Council’s inspection team is drawing up a survey schedule for all other buildings owned by Cardiff Council, programmed on a priority basis.

Checks already completed on City Hall and County Hall have confirmed these buildings do not contain RAAC.
