Electric Vehicles

We are keen to encourage greater use of electric vehicles in the city and are  installing charging points throughout the city to support this.

The aim is to provide residents and businesses with the confidence to invest in electric vehicles when they replace their cars.

Where are the charge points in Cardiff?

Cardiff Council has installed the first 18 public electric vehicle charge points across 10 locations in:

  • Canton
  • Cathays
  • Penylan
  • Plasnewydd
  • Riverside

Suggest a location for a charge point

You can submit suggestions to us for suitable locations for electric vehicle charge points across the city.

Locations for charge points must:

  • Not be immediately outside residential properties
  • Have wide pavements
  • Have plenty of public parking space available
  • Be on streets where there are no driveways, private garages or other private parking spaces.

You can apply for grant funding support to install chargers on your property.

We will review suggested locations and consult with the local power provider National Grid.

Full charge for an average electric vehicle is around 4-6 hours.

To ensure that there is good turnover of these spaces we are proposing to implement waiting restrictions. Vehicles must be connected to the charge point when parked there.

The vehicle charging system is managed by SWARCO eConnect and provides 7kw charge points.
You will need to register at swarcoeconnect.org via the Swarco E-Connect App (available for Android and OSX devices).

Once registered, drivers can input a repeat billing method (e.g. debit or credit card). All payment systems are secure and PCI-DSS compliant.

You will be billed once a month based on the usage on your account over the previous month.
Homeowners can apply for grants of up to 75% towards the cost of installing electric vehicle charge points at domestic properties.

  • Charge points in new developments - We have set out the type and number of electric vehicle charge points it expects to be provided in new developments across the city.
  • Council Fleet - We are taking the first steps to replace a proportion of its vehicle fleet with electric vehicles. The initial phase is focusing on the replacement of small cars and vans over the next few years.
  • Wider programme - We have ambitions to provide a network of chargepoints across the city to enable residents and visitors to drive and charge their electric vehicles in the city. Work is currently being undertaken to develop a delivery plan and we will provide more details in due course.
