Looking after a relative or friend

An unpaid carer is someone who does not get paid to provide care to a friend or relative.

Unpaid carers' lives can be affected from helping another person that has:

  • a physical or mental illness,
  • a physical or learning disability,
  • frailty, or
  • drug and alcohol misuse.

Lots of people do not realise that they are an unpaid carer, as there is no typical definition.

If you are an unpaid carer, you may help with:

  • general care such as giving medicine, changing dressings, helping with mobility,
  • domestic tasks such as like cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing and shopping,
  • emotional support such as helping with distressing life-threatening or life limiting mental health conditions
  • intimate care such as washing, dressing, toilet requirements
  • other tasks such as helping with household tasks, bill paying, helping with medical appointments.

How we can support you

You can get help from us if the person that you are caring for lives in Cardiff. If they do not live in Cardiff, you must contact their local authority. If you are an unpaid carer, we can provide you with support to help you look after your own health and wellbeing.

We will talk to you to understand your duties so we can direct you to the right support and services. For example:

  • free advice and assistance,
  • support that is focused on you and your needs,
  • accessing local support services, and
  • understanding your rights and entitlements.

You can also request a carers' needs assessment to help you get access to the support you need. You must be over 18 to get a carers assessment.
