Please note that applications for the Cardiff Hackney Emissions Reduction Grant Scheme (CHERG) are now closed.
If you are a taxi driver in Cardiff with a Hackney carriage, you could get a grant to upgrade to a Euro 6 or Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).
How can I apply?
You can apply for the grant if:
- you own a registered Hackney carriage that has been licensed with us since 1 February 2024,
- you live in Cardiff, and your taxi is registered to your home address,
- your main source of income is taxi driving, and
- you have used your taxi actively over the last 3 months.
You can request an application form by emailing: [email protected]
We will accept applications on a first come first served basis. When the full fund has been granted, we will stop reviewing applications. If this happens, we will email you to tell you.
We will not consider any incomplete applications.
We have the right to change the terms, or close the fund at any time.
How much could I get?
You could get between £5,000 and £10,000 to upgrade to a more efficient taxi.
The funding for Standard Vehicles and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAV) is:
| Taxi upgrade | Standard vehicle grant | WAV grant |
|---|---|---|
| Euro 3 to Euro 6 | £6,000 | £7,000 |
| Euro 4 to Euro 6 | £6,000 | £7,000 |
| Euro 5 to Euro 6 | £5,000 | £6,000 |
| Ay vehicle to Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) | £10,000 | £10,000 |
If you are applying for a BEV, you will get up to £5,000 after you have bought your new vehicle. You will then get a second payment of up to £5,000 after 12 months, if:
- your taxi is still registered, and
- you have used your taxi actively over the last 6 months.
Please note that the fund is a trial scheme. We will share grants fairly to all different vehicle types, and will review applications regularly.
What do I need to apply?
You will need:
- a completed and signed application form,
- proof of your address,
- a copy of the V5 logbook of the vehicle you wish to upgrade,
- taxi insurance documents and an active licence (this is evidence that your taxi has been actively used in the last 3 months), and
- proof of bank balance (to show you have enough money to buy the vehicle before you get the grant).
Only 1 application can be made per address.
We will send you an email to confirm we have received your application. You cannot buy or commit to buying a new vehicle until we have offered you a grant.
What happens next?
We will make a decision based on the information and evidence in your application. If your application is unsuccessful, we will email you with the reason it was rejected. You will not be able to appeal this decision.
If your application is successful, we will send you a letter that gives information about the grant offer. You will then be able to buy the vehicle you have applied for.
You must buy your new vehicle from a licensed VAT trader within 60 days of the grant offer. You will also need to keep proof of purchase so the grant can be paid to you. You will be paid when your new vehicle is registered with us and your old one has been removed.
Proof of purchase must be a bank statement. You cannot pay for your new vehicle with cash.
Your new vehicle must stay as a licensed taxi for the next 24 months. If your taxi is de-licensed during this time, we will ask you to pay back the full grant amount.
If your taxi is written off, you must buy a replacement vehicle that is the same Euro Class. If you do not, we can ask you to pay back the full grant amount.
If you receive this grant and are not eligible, you will need to pay back the full amount.
