The purpose of age restrictions on products such as tobacco, alcohol, solvents, DVDs, lottery tickets, fireworks, etc. is to protect young people from the harm.
We are working in partnership with the police, health promotion, community safety and local schools to reduce the number of illegal underage sales.
We do this by:
- responding to complaints of underage sales
- providing advice to traders who sell these products
- carrying out test purchases using underage volunteers to see if traders are complying with the requirements of the law
- giving warnings and prosecuting offenders where necessary
We have an Information for traders section which gives information and advice to anyone wishing to sell products that are age restricted.
