Postal vote renewal

The Elections Act 2022 introduced changes to:

  • how you apply for a postal vote in certain elections, and
  • how often you may need to renew a postal vote.

Check which elections are affected by these changes, and how you can vote by post:

UK Parliamentary elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections

Changes apply to these types of elections.

UK Parliamentary elections are also known as 'general elections'.

Find out how to apply to vote by post in UK Parliamentary and Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

You will need to renew your postal vote every 3 years.

If you applied for your postal vote for UK Parliamentary and Police and Crime Commissioner elections before 31 October 2023, you will need to renew it before January 2026. If this applies to you, we will contact you by email or post as a reminder to arrange your renewal.

If you do not respond when we contact you about renewing your postal vote, your postal vote will expire. You will only be able to vote in person at your allocated polling station.

Senedd, Cardiff Council and Community elections

Changes do not apply to these types of elections.

You will still need to update your signature with us every 5 years to vote in these types of elections, by law. We will contact you in advance, around the start of the same year to arrange this.
