Website upgrade on Tuesday 23 June

What we are doing to upgrade our website to improve accessibility and security for customers.

Comment on or object to a planning application

You can view planning applications and comments that have been made. Comments that have been made online can be seen under the comments tab. Comments that have been scanned and emailed can be seen under the documents tab.

Anyone can comment on a planning application. It does not matter how you heard about a planning application, and you do not need to have received a letter from us to comment.

If we cannot deal with an application under delegated powers, the Planning Committee will debate the application. View the guidance on your rights to speak at the committee.

How to make a comment

It is free to comment on a planning application.

Your comment will be open to the public.

There are 3 steps you must take to comment on an application.

Make a note of the reference number

If you do not know the reference number, you can find it by viewing the current planning applications online.

You can use the simple search box to find the application. You can input:

  • a full or partial postcode,
  • the single line of an address, such as a street name,
  • a keyword, or
  • the reference number.

The reference number is 10 digits. An example of a reference number is 12/12345/ABC.

It will be clearly displayed on all public notices and paperwork for the application.

When you search for an application online, it will show you all the related documents, outlines, pictures, and plans.

By post

If your property is directly next to the proposed development, you may be sent a letter about the planning application. This is at our discretion and depends on the scheme. The reference number of the application will be on the letter.

If you have not received a letter, or you have lost it, you can still find the planning application online. You can also email [email protected].

Find out the closing date for comments

How long you have to make a comment will depend on things such as:

  • the type of planning application,
  • the size of the building or demolition work, and
  • when the Planning Committee meets to make a decision about the application.

Usually, comments have to be made within the 21 days of the application being submitted.

You can find out when the closing date is for an application online on the Planning Portal (idox) . The closing date can be found in the first details tab.

If you have received a letter about the application, the closing date will be on the letter.

The closing date will also be on any documents that may have been put up in the area.

The Planning Committee

The committee is made up of Councillors and they make decisions about certain applications in Cardiff. You can find out if and when a planning application will be looked at by the committee online, under the details tab. It will be listed as Expected Decision Level.

You can make a comment online about an application at any time before the start of the meeting.

If you are unsure

If you are unsure about a closing date, please contact us as soon as possible with the planning application reference number.

Making a comment

You can make a comment online or by post.

To make your comment online, you will need to create an account on our online planning system.

If you make a comment online, you can track an application, and any updates will be sent to your email address.

To make a comment by post, please write to:
