Young carers

Young carers are children and young people under 18 who care for another person who may have a:
  • physical or mental illness,
  • disability,
  • learning disability, or
  • drug or alcohol problem.

Many young carers have the same responsibilities and face the same issues as adult carers, but this may have a different impact on their lives.

You can visit the Carers’ information pages for a detailed explanation of what the duties of a carer are.

This responsibility can lead to limited opportunities, education problems, bullying, lack of understanding from peers, isolation, and health and emotional difficulties.

Can I get support?

Young carers can ask for an assessment to find out the best way to help you. You can contact us on
029 2053 6490
If outside of office hours call the Emergency Duty Team on
029 2078 8570

If you are entitled to help, Children’s Services will set up a support package for you.

If you are not, you will be sign-posted to the appropriate agency or organisation that can give you the best help.
