Speech and Language Team

The main aim of the Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties (SLCD) Team is to build the confidence and capacity of staff in schools to meet the needs of pupils with speech, language and communication difficulties. The team includes specialist teachers, a speech and language therapist and specialist teaching assistants.

The team may:

  • Provide extra support for individual pupils
  • Provide a specialist training programme called ‘ELKLAN' after the people who created it.  Teachers and teaching assistants who complete this course are qualified  to provide specialist support pupils with speech and language needs in an inclusive classroom.  Most primary schools in Cardiff, and many secondary schools, now have ELKLAN trained teaching assistants and teachers.
  • Help schools to set up special programmes for identifying and meeting speech and language needs early. The programmes are called Speech Links and Language Links.  These programmes now operate in most primary schools and are currently being introduced in secondary schools.

An important part of the team's role is linking with other teams in the Education Service, with speech and language therapists and parents to make sure  that everyone is working together to meet  the child's needs.

The team also meets regularly with the AFASIC Advisory groupLink opens in a new window which is a voluntary sector organisation that supports children with speech and language needs.

Talk to the SEN Coordinator (SENCo) at your child's school to find out more about specialist support for pupils with speech, language and communication difficulties. Please contact the school's office to find out who the SENCo is at your child's school.
