Hearing Impairment and Visual Impairment Support Teams


The Hearing Impairment (HI) Team consists of qualified teachers of the hearing Impaired and a specialist teaching assistant.  The team works with children and young people of all ages from babies until they finish schooling. The team works in close partnership with health professionals. 


The team may: 


  • Provide extra support for individual pupils and pre-school children
  • Provide training to schools to help them understand the needs of hearing impaired pupils and to make reasonable adjustments to meet their needs.
  • Provide schools with training, equipment and materials to support hearing impaired pupils, such as radio aids. 



The central Visual Impairment (VI) Team consists of qualified teachers of the visually Impaired, specialist teaching assistants, mobility and rehabilitation specialists.  The team works with children and young people of all ages from babies until they finish schooling. The team works in close partnership with health professionals. 


The team may: 


  • Provide extra support for individual pupils and pre-school children, including Braille and specialist keyboard skills
  • Provide training to schools to help them understand the needs of visually impaired pupils
  • Provide schools with training, equipment and materials such as screen reading and magnification software and low vision aids. 


The mobility and rehabilitation specialist delivers mobility training and independent living skills as well as helping schools to carry out risk assessments and make reasonable adjustments. Talk to the SEN Coordinator (SENCo) at your child's school about specialist support for hearing or visual impairments. Please contact the school's office to find out who the SENCo is at your child's school.
