Autism Support Team

The Autism Support Team (AST) works with pupils, parents, schools and other professionals to make sure that children and young people on the autism spectrumLink opens in a new window are well supported by their school.

The team consists of specialist teachers and a specialist teaching assistant. The specialist teachers from the Specialist Resource Bases at Cathays High, Cantonian High and Pentrebane Primary also work with the team for part of each week.

As well as working with schools, the team leads the cross-service training group for Cardiff's Autism Strategy. They devise and deliver training to a range of services, including health professionals, children's services and the voluntary sector.

The team has led a parent support task group that has developed a set of workshops for supporting parents of children who have just received a diagnosis of autism. The AST have developed the "Thinking Through Autism: a self-reflective framework for schools",  which is a resource to support all schools in meeting the needs of learners on the autism spectrum.

Talk to the SEN Coordinator (SENCo) at your child's school to find out more about specialist support for pupils with an autism spectrum condition. Please contact the school's office to find out who the SENCo is at your child's school.
