Guidance for sending your child to school

We have put together a quick reference guide for parents on COVID-19 related absences. 

Choose an option for specific advice​​:

If you child has: 
  • High temperature - this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back.
  • A new continuous cough - this means coughing a lot more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours.
  • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste - this means you have noticed you cannot smell or taste anything. 

Action

  • Do not come to school.
  • Contact school to inform them.
  • Self-isolate the whole household for 10 days.
  • Get a test.
  • Inform the school immediately about the test result.

Return to school

When the test comes back negative.

Action

  • Do not come to school.
  • Contact school to inform them.
  • Agree an earliest date for possible return. Minimum of 10 days.
  • Self-isolate the whole household for 10 days.
  • Bubble isolate or remote learning.​

Return to school

Return to school when they feel better. They can return after 10 days even if they have a cough or loss of taste or smell. These symptoms can last for several weeks.​

  • Contact school to inform them.
  • Discuss when your child can come back to school (same day or next day).

When the test comes back negative.

Action

  • Follow usual school absence policy procedure.

After 48 hours following the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea if this is the cause of absence.


Action

  • Do not come to school.
  • Contact school to inform the​m. 
  • Self-isolate the whole household for 10 days.
  • Household member to get tested.
  • Inform the school immediately about the test result.

When the child has completed 10 days of isolation.

If the NHS test and trace has identified that your child h​as been in close contact of someone with symptoms of confirmed COVID-19:

  • Do not come to school.
  • Contact school to inform them. ​
  • Agree an earliest date for possible return. Minimum of 10 days.

When the child has completed 10 days of isolation.​

When the quarantine period of 10 days has been completed.

Action

  • Do not come to school.
  • Contact school to inform them. 
  • Shield until you are informed that restrictions are lifted and shielding is paused again.

When school inform you that restrictions have been lifted and your child can return.

Action

  • Do not come to school.
  • At home, support your child with remote education provided by school.
  • Your child will need to isolate for 10 days.

School will inform you when the bubble will be reopened.
