As part of the Council's continual review of the supply of and demand for school places, we are now consulting upon revising Welsh-medium catchment area arrangements for Ysgol Gymraeg Coed-Y-Gof and Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Gwaelod y Garth.

Ysgol Gymraeg Coed-Y-Gof serves an extensive area in the West of the city including parts of Ely, Fairwater, Llandaff, Radyr, Morganstown. At present, the Welsh-medium stream at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Gwaelod y Garth serves a catchment area including Gwaelod y Garth and Tongwynlais in Cardiff, and also some areas of Rhondda Cynon Taf including parts of Taffs Well and Nantgarw.

Pupils in these areas of Rhondda Cynon Taf are also served by Welsh-medium schools within the Rhondda Cynon Taf Local Education Authority, and are therefore able to be considered as resident within the catchment area of two Welsh-medium primary schools at present.

The proposed changes to catchment areas seek to remove this inconsistency in admission arrangements, and to achieve a balance between the revised Ysgol Gymraeg Coed-Y-Gof and Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Gwaelod y Garth catchment areas.

All pupils resident in Rhondda Cynon Taf would still retain the right to express a preference for admission to Ysgol Gynradd Gwaelod Y Garth.

A copy of the catchment area map detailing the proposed changes that would be implemented in September 2015 is available here.
