Update: School Organisation Proposals: Pontprennau Consultation on a proposal to establish a new 2 form entry English-medium primary school with a 48 full time equivalent place nursery.

Earlier this year we told you about the recommendation being made to Cardiff Council's Cabinet to respond to the demand for English-medium community primary education in the Pontprennau area of the city.

A public consultation took place in March and April regarding the proposal to establish a new build 1.5 form entry English-medium community primary school (enabling up to 45 pupils to be admitted per year group) in Pontprennau with a 32 full time equivalent (FTE) place nursery from September 2015.

It remains the firm intent to establish the proposed new school with nursery provision subject to the outcome of the statutory consultation process.

However, after the public consultation in the spring where views were received through letters, e-mails, public meetings and drop-in sessions, the Council's Cabinet is now advised to consider a recommendation to establish a larger school provision in response to the local demand for English-medium community primary education in this area of the city.

A report recommending a public consultation to consider the larger school provision was submitted for the Council's Cabinet to consider on 23rd September 2013.

At the Meeting the following recommendation was approved:

Establish a new 2 Form Entry English-medium community primary school with a 48 full time equivalent place nursery, as a new build facility combined with the existing community centre in Pontprennau, from September 2015.

As this is a change to the original proposal it will require further public consultation.

This public consultation will run from 22 October to 03 December 2013.

Pupils resident within the Pontprennau area currently attend a number of schools with many children travelling outside their local area to access education provision.

The proposed establishment of a primary school in Pontprennau would require changes to the Bryn Celyn and Glyn Coed Primary School catchment areas. Those catchment areas are also served by St. Bernadette's Catholic Primary School, St. David's C.W Primary School and Ysgol Pen y Groes.
