Consultation: Review of Welsh-medium secondary school catchment areas

A consultation is underway to establish a catchment area for the new Welsh-medium high school on the current St Teilo's Church in Wales High School site, and to achieve a balance between the remaining catchment areas of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr. The period of consultation will run until Tuesday 1 March 2011.

In September 2010 the Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning, Leighton Andrews, formally agreed to proposals:

  • To close Llanedeyrn High School
  • Transfer St Teilo's Church in Wales High School to the site of Llanedeyrn High School
  • Establish a new Welsh-medium high school on the current St Teilo's Church in Wales High School site from September 2012
  • Subject to obtaining any necessary planning consents, the new Welsh-medium school will be a community school for boys and girls aged 11-18 and it is intended that the capacity of the school when complete will be 1114 places

It is proposed that the catchment areas are apportioned (distributed) as follows:

How will the consultation work?

Parents of all Welsh-medium secondary and primary schools along with both Welsh-medium and English-medium nurseries and child care providers will receive a copy of a consultation document, showing the proposed catchment area map.

You will be invited to submit your views by Tuesday 1 March 2011 either by e-mail to schoolresponses@cardiff.gov.uk or send written responses to:

What next?

The findings of the consultation will be summarised and your views will be provided to the Council's Executive. The Council's Executive will consider all the issues and views received and will then decide whether to implement the proposed changes.

If agreement is reached to move forward with the proposed catchment area changes, they would take effect from September 2012.
