Visiting a Recycling Centre

Recycling centres are for the recycling and disposal of household rubbish only and are free for Cardiff residents to use.

If you attempt to use the recycling centre for the disposal of commercial waste, you will receive a Fixed Penalty Notice of £300 or face prosecution.

Only visit a recycling centre to get rid of items that you are unable to dispose of at the kerbside.

Bulky items must fit into the boot of your car. Our staff will not be able to assist you to unload your car.

You will need to book each time you visit. Each household is currently limited to:
  • 1 visit per day, and
  • 26 visits per year for cars
  • 10 visits per year for vans

If you are visiting in a van or a car with a trailer, you can only book 1 visit per month.

If you are visiting in a car, you can use your allowance flexibly but cannot visit more than once per day.

You must not use your vehicle registration number to book visits against different addresses. This will be identified, and you may be refused entry or have your booking cancelled.

Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance. You will need to set up an account and provide your home address and your vehicle registration details.

You need to bring your booking confirmation email and ID containing proof of your Cardiff address.

Non-recyclable waste

If you have items that we cannot recycle you can bring them to the site.

Before putting them in the skip our site attendants will need to confirm that your items are non-recyclable. We recommend you use clear bags or a container to help with this process. If you need to use bags to transport the items, you will need to open them to show our staff. You must not use Council issued green bags.

Examples of the material that can be put into our non-recyclable waste skip include:

  • Pet waste for example cat litter or animal bedding
  • Blinds
  • Divan bed
  • Garden furniture
  • Polystyrene
  • Thin plastic film packaging
  • Mirrors
  • Sofas and armchairs
  • Wallpaper
  • Baby items for example car seats, highchairs, prams or pushchairs
  • Video or cassette tapes

If you are unsure, please ask our staff. If we do not offer a recycling service to dispose of an item, you will be able to put it in the non-recyclable waste skip.

We do not accept bags of mixed waste. For example we will not accept a bag containing food mixed with recyclable materials.

If you have this type of waste to dispose of you can pay for our service, or use a private waste contractor. You will need to make sure they are a registered waste carrierExternal link opens in a new window
Cars are accepted at both Lamby Way and Bessemer Close.
Vans and cars with trailers are accepted at Bessemer Close only.

If you are visiting in a van you will need to wear a high visibility vest, and closed toe shoes. If you do not have your own vest, we can provide you with one. Our vests are sanitised after every use.

Please make sure to book at least 24 hours in advance.

Please note that 6/7 seater vehicles will only be accepted with the 1/2 rear seats folded down.
