Vehicle access to household recycling centres and other useful guidelines

Due to unforeseen circumstances, at this present time, Vans can only be taken to Bessemer Close. We apologise for any inconvenience.
Some larger vehicles need to book ahead to use the recycling centre. Please check below to see if your vehicle type require pre-booking. If you are bringing a van to any recycling centre, please ensure you are wearing suitable flat, closed toe footwear- no sandals, flip flops or heels please. Our recycling centres are fully operational sites.




  • cars
  • 4X4s (without pick up backs)
  • people carriers

Please note that 6/7 seater vehicles will only be accepted with the 1/2 rear seats folded down.


  • cars with small trailers (1.2m X 1.2m Maximum)
  • caravanettes
  • 4 x 4s with pick up backs
  • minibuses
  • small vans (including transporter type vans)
  • short wheeled base transit type vans


Please note: Vans over 2m in height are not accepted at the HWRC. However, they can be taken to our commercial recycling centre at a charge

These vehicles can only be taken to Bessemer Close recycling centre and each individual visit must be booked in.

To ensure the safe operation of the recycling centres, Bessemer Close can only accept a maximum of 15 booked vehicles per day. Therefore please book early to avoid disappointment.

To book your vehicle in onlineLink opens in a new window , you must provide 4 working days notice.  Alternatively you  can call C2C on (029) 2087 2087 between 8:30am – 4:00pm Monday – Friday and must give 24 hours’ notice. 

You can ask for a specific date up to 3 months in advance.  Booking is subject to availability.  These vehicles are limited to 10 visits a year, and a maximum of 3 visits a day

If you do not wish to book in, you can take vans to the Commercial Recycling Centre where you can turn up without booking.


  • large box vans (Luton type)
  • long wheel base / high top vans
  • any twin axle vehicle
  • any vehicle with a tail lift or tipping body
  • Pick-ups (excluding 4x4's)
  • Vans over 2m in height

Small vans, or short wheeled base transit type vans from a hire company can only be taken to Bessemer Close and each individual visit must be booked in.

If you have borrowed a van from your work to recycle materials from your home, you will need to provide a letter from your employer on headed paper giving permission for you to use the van. Any rubbish or recycling must be from your house and not business or commercial waste.

  • Weekends and bank holidays can get busy. Be prepared to queue
  • Please be patient while we change skips. Sometimes there is a short delay
  • Council recycling centres are for the recycling and disposal of household rubbish only
  • Once deposited at a recycling centre, items become the property of the council and may not be removed or sold from the site
  • Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 prohibits anyone depositing any waste or items for recycling that are not authorised by the waste management license
  • It is free for Cardiff residents to take household rubbish or recycling to council recycling centres
  • Waste from businesses or commercial work is not accepted at household recycling centres, even if the work was carried out at your home. This waste can be taken to the commercial recycling centre at Bessemer Close.
  • Household recycling centres only accept a small amount of building and/or demolition rubbish from small DIY projects carried out at private households. You can only bring up to 6 x 20kg bags of hardcore rubble a day. The rubble must be in bags. If you have more than this, you will need to contact a licensed skip-hire company
