Hygiene collections

If you are having issues with your hygiene collections during the strike action, please contact C2C.

If you cannot fit your nappies or incontinence waste into your black bin or black bag allowance for a fortnightly collection, you can sign up for hygiene collections.

Hygiene collections will be on the opposite week to your general waste collections. You should still put your nappies or incontinence waste into your black bin or black bags on your general waste collection week.

When you sign up to the service we will provide you with hygiene bags. You will either receive yellow or purple bags.

We will also provide you with a yellow caddy to store your hygiene bags between collections. Caddies should be used for storage only, please do not put your caddy out for collection.

What goes in your hygiene collection?

  • Nappies
  • Associated nappy changing rubbish, such as cotton wool, wet wipes, nappy sacks
  • Incontinence pads
  • Catheters
  • Stoma / Colostomy bags*
  • Plasters and bandages
  • Needles*
  • Sanitary waste
  • Vomit
  • Animal faeces

* See clinical and medical items

To dispose of your colostomy or stoma bags and catheters safely and hygienically, please empty the contents of the bag into your toilet, wrap the bag and place in your general household waste for collection.

Needles or syringes

You will need to arrange a sharps collection with your local health board. Cardiff Council does not collect needles or syringes.

For more information and advice about medical waste contact your local health board, district nurse team or NHS Direct.

Putting your hygiene waste out for collection

Put your hygiene bags on the kerb for collection. Or we can arrange with you to collect from a discreet location.

Check your collection day.

Do not keep your hygiene bags in your storage caddy when putting them out for collection. We will not collect from inside your caddy.

Hygiene waste bags can be heavy. Please separate your hygiene waste between bags to reduce the weight. You can put out as many bags as you need.

If your bag splits, please put the split bag inside another bag.

On each collection, we will leave you with the same number of bags that you present.

If you need additional bags, you can collect them from your local Hub.

If you do not put your hygiene bags out for four collections in a row, you will be removed from the service.

You can reapply for the service again at any time.

Cardiff Cloth Nappy Library

Welsh Government estimate around 143 million disposable nappies are thrown away in Wales each year. Reusable cloth nappies are an alternative which offer long term financial and environmental benefits.

If you are interested in trying out washable cloth nappies, Cardiff has a Cloth Nappy Library offering helpful advice and insight on using reusable nappies. A set of cloth nappies can be hired for a small fee, allowing you to trial them for a month.

For more information and updates about upcoming Nappy Library drop-in sessions, please follow Cardiff Cloth Nappy Library on Facebook or contact nctnappy@gmail.com.
