Bulky item collection

Donate items to charity

If your item is in good condition for re-use, you can donate it to charity, giving items a second life and raising money for good causes.  

The British Heart Foundation and the YMCA collect furniture and some larger electrical items free of charge, as long as they are in a good sellable condition.  

The British Heart Foundation can also collect bags of smaller items like clothes, children’s toys, books, CDs/DVDs.

Our collection service 

We offer a collection service for large or awkward household items and appliances such as:

 

  • Beds
  • White goods
  • Matresses

Please note that this service is for collecting items from your home only. You will need to present them kerbside for collection. 


Please put item/s out for collection after 6.30pm the day before collection. Any residents found placing items out for collection before this time could be fined.

If we can recycle your bulky item, we will collect it free of charge.  Items that cannot be recycled carry a small charge for their collection.

  

Items we collect for free

We will collect your item free of charge, if it is made entirely from a material that can be recycled at one of Cardiff’s recycling centres.  Materials accepted for recycling are:

  • Hard Plastics
  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Electrical appliances (large and small)
  • Rubble/ Sand – max of 6 bags
  • Textiles/ Shoes – minimum 2 bags
  • Carpet
  • UPVC window/ frames
  • Matresses
  • Media (books and CDs/ DVDs) – minimum 2 bags​​

Items you need to pay for

    Items made from a mixture of different materials or a material not listed above will carry a charge for collection.

      Typical chargeable items include:
      • Arm chairs and sofas
      • Divan bed bases
      • Furniture made from a mixture of materials (wood/metal/glass)

      Charges for typical household items are listed below:

      The minimum cost of collection is £12.50, this covers two items.

      You can book a maximum of 6 items. There are no concessions.


      Items we do not collect

      Unfortunately we are unable to collect some items. These include:

      • Asbestos
      • Bath (Fibreglass)
      • Boxes of tiles
      • Building Materials
      • Building Waste
      • Car/Engine Parts
      • Cast Iron Baths
      • Chemicals (Paint Stripper Etc)
      • Commercial vehicle tyres/ truck tyres 
      • Felt Roofing
      • Fluorescent tubes 
      • Gas Bottles/Canisters
      • Hospital Beds
      • Insulation Materials
      • Items Greater Than 6ft
      • Oil (Engine or Cooking)
      • Plasterboard
      • Tins of Paint
      • Tyres
      • Pianos
      • Garden waste

      How to arrange a bulky item collection

      To arrange a chargeable booking, you can visit one of our Hubs with cash or card.

      Alternatively please contact us on 029 2087 2087 to make the payment over the phone using a credit or debit card.​


      Please be aware:

      • Once the booking has been finalised, no additional items can be added to your booking. 
      • If your item is not as you have described it when you booked a free collection, the item will not be collected and the chargeable collection service will apply. 
      • Large and/or bespoke items may need to be assessed by a member of the Collections Team before we can accept the booking to ensure the items can be safely moved on to the collection vehicle.
      • If you choose to use an alternative collection company, make sure they are a registered waste carrier and have legal ways of disposing of your waste. 


       

      Once your booking has been made, should you wish to later amend the items please note that you can only swap like for like items, i.e recyclable for recyclable, chargeable for chargeable. You will need to contact us to make the amendment either via telephone on 029 2087 2087 or you can visit one of our hubs. 

      Bookings may be cancelled up to 3 full working days before the collection takes place.

       
      If you have more than one collection date, the 3 day notice period begins from the earliest date given.

       
      If you cancel the booking within 3 working days of the first collection date, you will not be granted a refund. You will be given the opportunity to select a later collection day or swap like for like items, i.e. recyclable item for recyclable item. You will not be able to swap a recyclable item for a non-recyclable item. 

       
      Collections teams may not collect your item(s) if:

      • items are not as described at the time of booking.

      • items are not placed out for collection in a manner agreed at the time of booking (e.g. dismantled)

       
      You will then be responsible for removing the waste from the highway. Failure to do so may result in enforcement action being taken.
      Assisted collections

       
      Where assistance with collections is required from locations which are not at ground floor level, a working lift that can accommodate the bulky items must be available. Access to the items must not be blocked.

       
      Operatives are unable to manually handle items down stairs, assistance will only be provided where the Collection Operative deems it safe to do so. 
      Where Operatives are requested to move items from the first floor or above, we will not be held responsible for any damage caused to the property during the manual handling process. Operatives are not able to help with the dismantling of furniture.
