Carer permits allow carers to use resident permit parking areas near the home of the person they care for.
Carer permits are free
You can apply for a carer permit if you are:
- a professional carer employed in the care sector
- a non-professional carer receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Credit
It is the carer who must apply for a permit, not the resident.
Carer permits are digital and linked to your vehicle registration so you do not need to display anything.

Create an account on MiPermit to apply for a digital permit.
You will need to include your full name, address and proof of:
- how the vehicle is linked to you, for example a V5C or insurance document, and
- your employment if you are a professional carer, or
- your Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Credit if you are a non-professional carer.

If you are a professional carer
After your account is approved, you can use the MiPermit app to register your vehicle in the street where you need to park.
If you cannot find a parking space outside of the restrictions, you can use your permit in any of the permit areas identified on the MiPermit app.
Your permit is valid for up to 2 hours after the start time, and you can have more than 1 active permit at a time.
If you are a non-professional carer
You can use MiPermit to apply for a permit for the street where you provide care.
Your permit is valid for 24 hours.
You can apply for a permit up to 14 days before.
We may ask you for proof of address of the person you care for at any time.
