Road closures

Works to upgrade the North Road cycle route begin on the 5th March 2018 and are due to take 24 weeks.

Unfortunately, it will not be possible to keep the cycle route open for the duration of the works and signed diversions will be in place.

Three alternative routes are available for cyclists:

  • An on road diversion using Colum Road
  • An off road diversion using Bute Park. This will be available for use at night, but the route is unlit. Cyclists using this route are advised to make sure they have appropriate lights fitted to their bikes in good working order
  • Walk your bike on the footway on North Road

Mardy Road Bridge in Cardiff will close to road traffic from 18 March 2017 until autumn 2018, as essential work to upgrade the railway continues in preparation for a new fleet of electric trains which will improve journeys for passengers.

The 121 year-old road bridge, which connects Rumney and Newton, will be replaced with a new and improved structure to give clearance for electric trains beneath as part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan. The bridge has also reached the end of its lifespan and the new structure will also be able to withstand the modern city traffic above.

As the bridge is currently too low to accommodate the new fleet of trains it has to be fully demolished and then rebuilt in a higher position.

Some advance preparatory works will begin on Monday, 30 January and temporary two-way traffic management will be in operation on the road bridge to ensure work can be safely carried out.

For further information about the project, visit the Network Rail websiteExternal link opens in a new window  or contact Network Rail’s 24 hour hotline 08457 11 41 41.

In October 2017 work started on the A468/A469 Pwllypant Roundabout which is estimated to go on for a period of 12 months. Caerphilly County Borough Council have advised this will lead to significant delays in the area. Full details and updates on the progress can be viewed on their websiteExternal link opens in a new window

Night time closures will apply (7pm - 6am) for annual maintenance, testing and cleaning of the tunnels.
