Child Cycle Training Courses

We Offer National Standard Cycle Training (level 1 and 2) to all Cardiff primary schools.

National Standard level 1

This includes:

  • checking your bike and your clothing,
  • making sure your helmet fits.
  • getting on and off the bike,
  • starting and stopping safely,
  • controlling your bike, and
  • be able to control the bike while signaling and looking back.

Training is carried out in a traffic free environment.

National Standard level 2

Trainees are expected to make judgements and decisions at junctions and roads with traffic whilst turning left and right.

Wearing a cycle helmet is compulsory for all of our cycle training courses.

If you are a member of school staff and would like further information or to book a course for your school, please contact us or telephone 029 2078 8528.

In addition to the school-based courses, National Standard Cycle Training courses are held during the school holidays at the Road Safety Centre in Maindy.

The course is open to all Cardiff children aged nine years and above who are able to ride and own a bike. The course runs for four mornings or afternoons.

Level 1 will be taught and assessed on the Monday using the Road Safety Centre’s road training layout

Level 2 will take place on risk assessed roads near the Road Safety Centre in Maindy.

Please be aware that children cannot be taken on the three on-road training sessions unless they have successfully completed Level 1.

Bicycles can be stored overnight for convenience.

A fee of £10 per child is required to reserve places.

This course is aimed at children who are unable to ride a bike. Children will learn in very small groups to be able to balance and make the bicycle move safely. If this is achieved, they will then be taught the Level 1 National Standards Cycle Training Objectives.

A fee of £20 per child is required to reserve places.

If you would like further information or to book a place on a course, please contact us or telephone 029 2078 8528.
