Digital Parking Permits

Digital permits are available in some parts of the city. You will receive a letter to let you know if your area is changing to Digital permits.

Using a digital permit means that you do not need to display anything in your vehicle. Enforcement Officers have a record of all valid permits and vehicle registrations.

You can apply for a parking permit if you live in a street that is part of the Residents Parking Permit scheme.

You can apply for resident parking permits if the address provided is your primary address. There is a limit of 2 resident permits and 1 visitor permit for each property. All permits are valid for either 6, 9 or 12 months.

Create a MiPermit account

To apply for a digital permit you will need to create an account on our MiPermit system.

To do this you can:

  • Download the MiPermit app on your phone and fill out the account registration form

To create an account you will need to provide:

  • your full name
  • your house number and postcode
  • your council tax number (we need this as proof that you live at the property).

If you are unable to set up an account online you can call the MiPermit team on 0333 123 6006 for help.

Once your account has been set up you will be able to buy your digital permits.

Please note you will need to buy your first digital permits via the online parking permit system and not the app. Once you have bought your permit or permits you will then be able to manage them through the app.

If you do not know or do not have access to a council tax number please complete a MiPermit account set up application form (116kb DOC)Link opens in a new window. Email or post the completed application form to:

To apply for a resident permit you will need:

  • Your vehicle registration number.
  • Proof that the vehicle is bring kept at your address and linked to the permit holder.

A proof of vehicle can be:

  • a Vehicle Log Book (V5C),
  • Hire or lease agreement or
  • Insurance Document. The insurance address should be where you keep the car.

If you are a student and you are taking your car with you to university, your car should be insured at your university address, whether it is student halls or a shared house or flat.
Your home address for the motor insurance must be where you will be spending most of your time, but you can have a separate correspondence address if you don’t want your mail going to your temporary address. Changing your address can make your premium more expensive but if you don’t tell your insurer that you’ve moved across the country you risk invalidating any future claims.

You can buy visitor parking hours if you live in a street that is part of the Residential Parking Permit scheme. Your visitors can use these hours whenever they need to park.

You can buy up to 6 batches of 850 hours. 1 batch of 850 hours will cost £5. You will be able to buy a maximum of 5,100 hours per year.

Once you have bought hours you will need to register your visitor’s vehicle when they need to park.

You can use visitor parking hours immediately after buying them. To activate the visitor hours, log in to the MiPermit system and click on ‘Manage Digital Permits’.
Any permits due for renewal will be flagged on your account in the MiPermit system.

If your account has an email address attached to it, we will send out a reminder a few weeks before the permit expires.

You can renew your permit online or by using the Mipermit app. You will need to:

  • Click the ‘Renewal’ button in the menu
  • Select the permit you would like to renew
  • Click the ‘Renew Permit’ button

This information will automatically populate the permit purchase page.

You will be able to make changes to the information on this page if you need to.

You will need to enter payment card details to complete the renewal.

If you choose the ‘Auto Renew’ option when you apply then your permit will automatically renew with the same details every year until you choose to remove this option. The payment will be taken 7 days before your current permit expires. If you want to stop the auto renew you can change your details in the ‘Managing Digital Permits’ section.
To change your vehicle details you will need to log into your MiPermit account and click on ‘Buy Digital Permits and Bookings’. Search for ‘Vehicle Change Permit’ and complete the application. You will need to provide:

  • Confirmation of your current permit number
  • Confirm of your previous vehicle registration
  • Proof of vehicle being linked to the address
You cannot transfer permits between properties. If you move property please cancel your current permit. You can apply for a refund for any full months that remain unused on your permit minus a £5 administration fee.

Additionally, you should contact the MiPermit team who will cancel your account at your previous address. You will then be able to reapply for a new account at your new property.
