Arts Development & Funding

The A2: Arts Active team works with Arts Development, St David’s Hall and the New Theatre to offer a wide variety of education, community and audience engagement initiatives.

Education, community and audience engagement at St David’s Hall and the New Theatre

  • Audience development.
  • Helping to break down the barriers that can prevent some people from enjoying the arts.
  • Developing talents and life skills, especially among groups who are socially and economically disadvantaged, and for whom participation and engagement with the arts can act as a catalyst for change and personal development.
  • To raise the profile of St David’s Hall and the New Theatre.

For twenty-five years, the St David’s Hall has been the National Concert Hall of Wales, while the beautifully restored Edwardian New Theatre has been an integral part of Cardiff’s cultural life since 1906. In addition to providing an exceptionally diverse programme encompassing music, drama and dance, the two venues share an enterprising community programme – Arts Active – which last year undertook 24 projects across Cardiff and surrounding areas, consisting of 860 sessions with 9,868 different participants. The Arts Active education and community programme is recognised as one of the best of its kind for a performing arts venue, introducing the performing and visual arts in a fresh and innovative way to the widest possible range of people, especially those who have never before had the chance to take part in arts activities.

Lefel 1

Lefel 1 is our pop-up studio space at St David’s Hall we are developing in the old Celebrity Restaurant s. We will use the venue to promote work for, by and with young people. Through Lefel 1 we aim to give young people an involvement in all aspects of presenting performances, from marketing to box office to the house management and technical side to the creation and presentation of the show itself.

Cardiff Gamelan

We use our set of Javanese instruments to support the teaching of music in schools, facilitate group music making and promote a non-western musical form.

Dawns Haf

We facilitate high quality dance training programme for young people interested in a career as a dancer that develops technique and skills and presents an insight into the disciplines and environment of a professional dancer.

Tiddly Prom

We present an accessible, interactive and informative preschool concert to tour venues and community centres reaching those young children who would not usually get to experience live music.

We work with primary school pupils to use their work to create a fun performance exploring the issues and facts regarding pollution and respect for the immediate and surrounding environment through music, visual art and poetry.

We promote music-making with professional support and presenting it regardless of expertise, skill level or background, to the highest possible standard as an individual, small group or large ensemble.

We work closely with many of the productions and promoters presenting at St David’s Hall & the New Theatre to facilitate and jointly promote any opportunities for educational and community activity.

Work Experience

We also run a comprehensive work experience, placement and internship programme for students at secondary school through to university and beyond.
