A guide to Kickstart for Youth support services

Kickstart is a national scheme providing employment opportunities for 16 to 24 year olds who are claiming Universal Credit.

Employers across a range of sectors will provide 6 month work experience placements that are a minimum of 25 hours per week.

The aim is to give young people who are at risk of long term unemployment a chance to gain experience that could lead to longer term opportunities.

Is the young person you support eligible to claim Universal Credit?

Find out if they are eligible and how to help them apply by contacting our Into Work team.

You can contact the Into Work team by calling 029 2087 1071 or by visiting the

Are they already claiming Universal Credit?

If the young person you support has a job centre work coach ask them to get in touch via their Universal Credit Journal for guidance.

To find out more about the scheme and how you can help a young person access the scheme call the Job Centre on 0800 328564 or visit the GOV.UK website.External link opens in a new window

How the Kickstart process works

  1. Limited details of a job are sent to the young person via a message on their Universal Credit Journal (Universal Credit account). A text message alert will be sent to the young person to notify them to look at their account.
  2. The young person notifies their work coach - via their journal, phone or email - if they are interested in the job. The work coach sets up an appointment to discuss further.
  3. The work coach and young person agree whether the job is suitable and whether the young person should continue to apply.
  4. Work coach notifies employer of the young person’s interest in the job.
  5. Employer gets in touch with the young person to begin the application and interview process.

If the young person is unsuccessful they should get back in touch with their work coach in order to be considered for other opportunities.
