A guide to Kickstart for Businesses

Kickstart is a national scheme providing employment opportunities for 16 to 24 year olds who are claiming Universal Credit.

Employers across a range of sectors will provide paid 6 month work experience placements that are a minimum of 25 hours per week.

The aim is to give young people who are at risk of long term unemployment a chance to gain experience that could lead to longer term opportunities.

The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to create new job placements for 16 to 24 year olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of long term unemployment. Employers of all sizes can apply for funding which covers:

  • 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage depending on the age of the participant) for 25 hours per week for a total of 6 months,
  • associated employer National Insurance contributions, and
  • employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.

Employers can spread the start date of the job placements up until the end of December 2021.

What support will you get?

You will get £1,500 funding per job placement for setup costs and to support the young person develop their employability skills. If someone else helps you to do some of this for you, you will have to agree how you will share this money.

From 3 February 2021, employers can apply directly to the Kickstart schemeExternal link opens in a new window for any number of job placements.

The threshold of 30 job placements is being removed however; you can still choose to apply through a Kickstart Gateway organisation such as Cardiff and Vale College.
