Nationality Checking Service

The Nationality Checking Service is a partnership between the Home Office and the City and County of Cardiff.


The service provides you with the opportunity to have your documents and application form checked when applying for British Nationality.


Our staff are trained and registered to check and forward your application to the Home Office. They will photocopy and certify your documents and return them to you at the appointment so they remain in your safe keeping.


Who can use the Nationality Checking Service?

Why should I use the service?

Staff will check to ensure that your application form is completed correctly and that you have provided the correct supporting documents, as required by the Home Office.


All documents, such as your passports, certificates, P60’s etc will be returned to you at the end of the appointment so that, in most circumstances, you will be able to travel while your application is being considered by the Home Office. However, if you have a “Life in the UK” test certificate the original document will need to be sent to the Home Office.


The Checking Officers are trained by the Home Office and are regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC).

You will need to book an appointment by contacting 029 20 871 680 / 684.


The total fee for the Checking Service is payable at the time of making your appointment and is payable by credit or debit card. The fee paid for the Checking Service is not refundable.

The Appointment

Please arrive promptly for your appointment at the Register Office, City Hall, Cardiff


You must have completed the relevant application form(s) in full and your documents must be in order.


You will need to show that you know about life in the UK and have English Competency. You need to provide the Life in the UK Test certificate and either:


  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at entry level 3 or above
  • Educated to degree level and provide confirmation that it is taught in English or the equivalent to an English degree
  • A pass via an English Language test which meets Home Office requirements

A member of staff will meet you in the reception area and take your documentation for checking and copies will be made by the member of staff.


You will then be invited to a private office to complete the appointment and your documentation will be returned to you.


Your application and supporting documents will then be sent by first class recorded delivery to the UK Border Agency for you.

Joint citizenship and passport application service

Please note that for all Nationality Checking Service appointments from 1st March 2018 Cardiff will no longer be able to offer the Joint Passport Checking Service.
