School holiday support for families

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The 'Food and Fun' scheme offers a range of support to children and families facing financial difficulties during the summer. The scheme is delivered by Cardiff Council and its partners.

The scheme provides free, good quality meals, activities, and sports for youngsters. It can also offer families advice on free and low-cost healthy meals, and guidance on keeping kids active and entertained.

​Support for Families ​



Parents and families are urged to contact Cardiff Money Advice on 029 2087 1071, if they feel they are struggling to make ends meet or would like help with accessing benefits. Among the schemes it can help with are: 

  • Healthy Snack Scheme Vouchers 
  • Free School Meals 
  • Council tax reduction 
  • Homelessness Prevention Fund 
  • Discretionary Housing Payment 


Healthy Start Vouchers
Help to buy healthy foods and milk for young children and during pregnancy.  

School Essentials Grant
Help to buy school uniforms and other non-IT school equipment.  

Rail transport offers
Free rail transport for kids under 11 (travelling with a fare-paying adult) and 11 to 16 year olds travel free off-peak.

Free or Low-Cost Food








Fresh food, fruit and veg for a small weekly subscription of usually around £5. 
 
Cathays Community Fridge
pay what you can afford for food such as sandwiches, cooked meat, dairy, veg etc. Cathays Community Centre, Cathays Terrace. Every day, 9:30am to 11pm. 
 
Al-Ikhlas Foodbank
Al-Ikhlas Centre, Broadway, Adamsdown. Every Tuesday, 10am to 12 noon. 
 
Food for Life
Free and nutritious plant-based meals. Atma Lounge, Capital Centre, Cardiff City Centre. Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm. Saturday 11am to 5pm. 
 
Rainbow of Hope Drop-in Centre
Free lunch and hot drinks. Rainbow of Hope, Broadway, Adamsdown. Monday to Thursday 10:30am to 1pm. Saturday 12 noon to 1pm. 
 
Rumney Forum
Foodbank (register weekly for Tuesday appointments), community fridge, and pantry. Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm. Brachdy House, Brachdy Road, Rumney. 
 
Friday Food Club
Pantry for people in Llanedeyrn and Pentwyn. Register weekly for Friday appointments. Glenwood Community Church, Circle Way West, Llanedeyrn.  
 
FoodCycle
Family friendly, free hot meals. 

  • Ely: Every Monday 6:30pm, Dusty Forge, Cowbridge Road West, Ely.
  • ​Riverside: Every Wednesday 6:30pm, Wyndham Street Centre, Riverside.​

 
The Living Room
Free breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Rumney Chapel, Brachdy Road, Rumney. Monday 9am to 5pm, Tuesday 9am to 7pm, Wednesday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Splo-Down
​A community food market where you pay what you can affordEvery Wednesday 5pm to 7pm. Oasis Centre, Splott Road, Splott.
