How to vote

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ ​Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm on polling day, and are usually public buildings like schools or local halls.

You can take your polling card with you to show who you are, but you don’t have to. ​

Give your name and address to the staff inside the polling station when you arrive.

You’ll be given a ballot paper containing a list of the people, parties or other options you can vote for.​​

Postal voting

If you do not want to go to the polling station on election day, you can vote by post. You will receive your ballot papers and a postal vote statement between 2 and 3 weeks before the election day.
  
If you are not already registered to vote, you will need to register to vote first​, then download a postal vote application form​​​​​​​​​​​External link opens in a new window​​ and email it to electoralservices@cardiff.gov.uk​​​​​​​​​​​External link opens in a new window​.

Postal ballot packs must be returned by 10pm poll day, to the Returning Officer, alternatively they can be handed into any polling station in the electoral area on poll day. 

You will need to complete a new postal application if you move house. 

Proxy voting 


You can choose someone to vote on your behalf if you cannot visit the polling station on election day.

You will need to complete a new proxy application if you move house.

Emergency Proxy voting 

If you cannot visit a polling station on election day for unexpected reasons, you can get an emergency proxy vote to let someone else vote for you.  

You can assign an emergency proxy vote if: 
  • You have a medical condition, illness or disability which arises after the deadline for an ordinary proxy application  
  • your occupation, service, or employment means you cannot go to the polling station in person, and you become aware of this after the deadline for ordinary proxy applications. 
 
Contact us on 029 2087 2087 to apply for an emergency proxy before 5pm of election day. 

Waiver

If you are unable to sign in a consistent manner you can request a waiver, please email electoralservices@cardiff.gov.uk​​​​​​​​​​​​External link opens in a new window​ to request a postal waiver application. 

Keeping your Postal or Proxy vote up to date  

 
If you are a postal or proxy voter, we will contact you between January and February every 5 years to ask you to provide your up-to-date signature. This is to keep the most accurate signature on record.  

Your postal or proxy vote will be cancelled if you don’t provide your up-to-date signature.
