How to register to vote

Local elections in Wales will take place on Thursday 4 May. Make sure you can take part and register to vote.

Only people who are registered can take part in May’s elections. People living in Cardiff will need to register to make sure that they don’t miss out on voting on polling day.

Registering is easy and you can apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-voteExternal link opens in a new window in just a few minutes. You will need your address, date of birth and national insurance number.

If you can’t vote in person you can still have your say with a postal or proxy vote, where a person you trust votes on your behalf. Visit www.yourvotematters.co.ukExternal link opens in a new window to find out how to apply.

Why you should vote

By voting, people can have a say on issues that directly affect their day-to-day lives in Wales. It’s important that anyone who is eligible to be on the register, but has not registered, does so.

For those who prefer to register using the paper form, this can be downloaded from the registration website above. Alternatively forms can be requested from your local electoral services team on 029 2087 2087.

The deadline to register to vote is Thursday 13 April 2017.
