Key worker Childcare

We have received a high number of applications for key worker childcare places.
Thank you for your patience while we review your application.

We are providing childcare for key workers in a small number of centralised locations across the city. Childcare support for Pre-school children is being co-ordinated  via the Council’s Family Gateway.

Please use the form on this page to apply for childcare for children from 0 - 14 years.

Keyworkers that are critical to the COVID-19 response are advised that childcare provision should only be used if there is no safe, alternative form of childcare available.

Provision is still being prioritised for health and social care workers (including those working in homeless hostels and Outreach) and in the emergency services however, the provision arrangements will now also aim to accommodate wider categories of keyworkers, where possible.

This is in addition to a small number of vulnerable children who will also receive childcare provision.

Key workers in any other of the Welsh Government’s Key worker categories, are asked to confirm with their employer that their specific role is ‘critical’ to business continuity in the provision of their essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to be eligible for childcare provision.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a childcare place.

The application process is outlined below.

Eligibility Criteria for Key worker childcare provision

  • Pre-school children aged 0 - 2 years (or up to 3 years of age if not yet registered at Nursery school) who are Cardiff residents.
  • Children aged 3-14 years (Nursery, Reception and up to Year 9) registered at a Cardiff school
  • Provision will be prioritised for Keyworkers in Health and Social Care (including Homeless Hostels and Outreach) and the Emergency services.

Places should not be requested for children who, based on government adviceExternal link opens in a new window , should be self-isolating or socially distancing. Parents should not rely for childcare upon those at higher risk from the virus, such as grandparents, friends or family members with underlying health conditions.

Vulnerable learners

These locations will provide support for some vulnerable learners, who may be:

  • Children on the child protection register
  • Children in need of care and support from social care
  • Children looked after
  • Young Carers
  • Disabled children
  • Pupils with statements of ALN/ SEN

The majority of vulnerable learners will be safest looked after at home by their families. This is essential to limit the transmission of COVID-19. Our schools have identified their vulnerable learners and will be keeping in regular contact with their families.

However, we are aware that families will be under pressure in the coming weeks, and some families of vulnerable learners will struggle to cope without some external support or respite. We will be working with Children Services, health teams and schools to identify vulnerable children where there may be compelling social grounds for offering care.

If you think your child may need a place, please talk to your child’s school in the first instance.

Vulnerable learners will attend these locations only within school hours, and may be offered a part time or temporary place.
