COVID-19 School Streets Road Closures

The COVID-19 School Streets Road Closures is a new school traffic scheme to help maintain social distancing when schools reopen from Monday 29 June. The scheme is separate from our original School Streets pilot, which is still running at this time.
Roads around school gates are often dominated by cars during school drop off and pick up times.

As pupils and staff return to school it is important that the area with in the immediate vicinity of schools is safe and accessible for everyone. We are implementing temporary measures outside some schools to assist safe, social distancing for pupils and staff arriving and leaving school, as well as encouraging children and families to use active travel on their journey to school.

How it works

Motor vehicles will not be permitted to drive in the street during prescribed hours.

Road closure operating times have been listed for each participating school.

The temporary road closure will be delineated with traffic cones and staffed by Cardiff Council.

Blue Badge Holders and residents will be able to access the street at all times.

By reducing the number of vehicles around school entrances during these times we hope to make the streets safer for pupils, staff and parents/guardians as they return to school.

Active Travel

To support the school and the local community, parents and carers should travel with their children to and from school, ideally on foot, or by bike, scooter or any other means of active travel. Social distancing should be maintained on the journey to and from school. Closing the street directly outside the school will not only help to make the street safer, but will help air quality around the school site, increase physical activity levels and reduce the number of cars driving to the school site.

We will implement a temporary pavement widening scheme on Sanatorium Road, Canton (713kb PDF).Link opens in a new window The pavement will be widened on one side of the street between the junctions of Lansdowne Road and Broad Street.  The scheme is part of a series of temporary measures being put in place to assist social distancing during the school run. This section of Sanatorium Road is a busy thoroughfare for pupils, parents and staff who walk, cycle and scoot for the school journey. The scheme forms part of a pilot which could see permanent changes being made to this section of Sanatorium Road to encourage more active travel on the school journey.

The Active Travel team has been working with local schools who have identified this particular section of Sanatorium Road as a barrier to walking, cycling and scooting due to its narrow pavements. The temporary pavement widening will be in place for six months from Monday 29 of June.

If you have any questions or comments about the scheme, please email travelplans@cardiff.gov.uk

Street closures

The streets listed around each school will be part of a temporary road closure to support social distancing within the immediate vicinity of the school. View maps of the temporary road closures by clicking on the name of each school in the table. The temporary road closure will be in place for four weeks from Monday 29 June 2020 and may extend to the autumn term depending on further guidance from the Welsh Government.
