Personal details

Rod was born in Perth, Scotland and moved to Cardiff in 1974.  He is married to Sue and they have three children and seven grandchildren.


Rod moved to Radyr in 1974 to work in the paper and packaging industry.  He worked until retirement as Director in charge of a group of companies in what is now a large multinational company and one of the biggest recyclers of paper in the world.

Rod is a former governor for Radyr Comprehensive School and a current governor of Radyr Primary School.  For several years Rod was Chair of Governors at Radyr Primary and assisted its growth from I.5 form entry to 2 form entry plus a nursery unit.


Rod is a Community Councillor for the Ward of Radyr & Morganstown.  He was elected to Cardiff Council in 2008, winning the seat from Labour.  During this time Rod has been a member of a wide range of different committees and was particularly involved in Economy & Culture, Environment, Audit, corporate parenting and Policy Review & Performance.  Rod also served as Deputy Lord Mayor of Cardiff in 2018 -19.

Rod has also been a member of the Fire Authority and acted as Chair of the Human Relations Committee which involved chairing numerous pension appeals, disciplinary hearings and committee meetings.  He chaired the joint scrutiny of the Prosiect Gwrdd project.


Rod and Sue, in normal times, regularly attend events at the Royal Welsh College, New Theatre, St. David’s Hall and The Millennium Centre.  Rod has been Captain and Chairman of Cardiff Hockey Club and President of Cardiff Caledonian Society.  He is also a former Chair of Radyr Tennis Club, former Captain of Radyr Golf Club and a Vice-President of Radyr Cricket Club. 

Rod and Sue are big supporters of local activities, in particular the Annual Radyr Festival.  

Lord Mayor’s Charity   

The charity which the Lord Mayor has nominated to support during 2020/21 is Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.  All funds raised will be used to support people living with dementia in Cardiff and across Wales and help provide vital services such as ‘Dementia Connect’ - a telephone hub to ensure people living with Dementia are not forgotten.
