Community resilience

​The definition of community resilience is: “Communities and individuals harnessing local resources and expertise to help themselves in an emergency, in a way that complements the response of the emergency services.”

Community resilience is a part of many communities and it continually changes and evolves. While the goodwill and initiative that people demonstrate on the day during an emergency is vital, people are now taking steps individually and collectively to prepare themselves in advance of an emergency actually happening.

A few important simple actions before an emergency occurs can help keep you and your family safe. 

Consider the following:

  • Fit smoke alarms to your property.



  • Talk to friends and family and arrange an “Evacuation Buddy”, this would be your first contact if you had to leave your home and needed to keep yourself and family immediately safe. You and your family would be much more comfortable with friends or family than you would be in an Evacuation/rest Centre set up by the Council.


  • Have a grab bag ready with essential contact details and supplies including essential medication needed by family members or pets. You might also want to include copies of important personal documents like insurance documents and pet inoculation Cards /records.   • Make sure you plan to keep your pets safe. Never risk your safety to rescue pets in an emergency that is a risk to your safety but you are responsible for your pets welfare.


  • Consider a pet evacuation buddy, a friend might not be able to have your family stay in an emergency but they might be willing to look after your cat or dog until you can go home or arrange kennels for them.
